Once you arrive in Orkney it will not take long for you to relax into the local pace of life where there is time to take notice of your surroundings. However don’t let this deceive you. There is always something happening and you can get involved. For a taster of events and festivals in Orkney planned for 2009 please select from the following options to view events from April to August.

July

  • July 7th to 31st – Orkney Craftsmen’s Guild – Exhibition and sale of crafts to include jewellery, knitwear, photography, cross stitch, felt, sheepskins, cards etc.
  • July 3rd – Longhope Sailing Regatta
  • July 10th – Holm Yacht and Single Handed Dinghy Regatta
  • July 17th – Stromness Sailing Regatta
  • July 18th – Stromness Golf Club Competition, visitors welcome
  • July 18th to 24th – Stromness Shopping Week Community gala week – Events for locals and visitors to include competitions, exhibitions, side shows, entertainment and a firework display.
  • July 31st – Westray Regatta
  • July 31st – Orkney Golf Club – Kirkwall Open

The Ba', a great Orkney tradition, is a rugby-like game played with a hand crafted leather Ba’ and takes place twice a year on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in the streets of Kirkwall. Up to 200 Uppies and Doonies battle for several hours to gain the trophy watched by huge crowds of locals and visitors.
